Aberdare Community School
Aberdare Community School, in Welsh Ysgol Gymunedol Aberdâr, opened its doors to students in May 2015. The new super-school was formed from a merger between Aberdare High School, Aberdare Girls' School and Blaengwawr Comprehensive School, with a total capacity of 1,600 pupils.
The three-storey school campus has an open, double atrium design with break-out areas, independent from classrooms and within carefully-designed corridor spaces. Havelock advised on all aspects of design, including space planning, colour schemes and furniture selection. Over 2,000 chairs and 1,000 tables were incorporated, along with soft furnishings and specialist classroom equipment.
The new complex, the largest of its kind in the Valleys, provides a host of modern facilities including a university-style lecture theatre, recording studio, film-editing suite, and specialist lab environments for textiles, catering and engineering classes. The innovative establishment boasts full wireless connectivity, with a ratio of one computer for every two pupils.
The modern, contemporary learning environment forms part of the Welsh government’s 21st Century Schools framework. The £50m development encourages all-inclusive learning, while benefitting the wider community and adding to ongoing regeneration of the Aberdare area.
