Recognising Trends Towards Flexibile Environments
Early 2009 saw the launch of a new range of products from ESA to allow us to deliver the flexible spaces that are increasingly desired within education today.
The growing need for flexible environments is driven by many trends including:
- A move from the traditional 'Taught regime' to a 'Learning environment'. Group work, individual study and more traditional teaching are now used in combination. Flexibility ensures a space can change as the needs of its occupants do.
- The use of schools 24 hours a day. Schools are now used as a community resource as well as the traditional school role.
- There is a move to make schools all-inclusive, supporting those with special needs who may have historically been in separate establishments.
- The fast changing role of IT within education. With the advent of wireless technology, schools are using IT in many forms, from fixed IT classrooms with hardwired PCs through to internet cafe style touchdowns.
- There is an increased awareness of ergonomics and posture and the effect it can have on both learning and the reduction of back pain both at school and in later life.
- Future-proofing; providing flexible spaces helps ensure schools are fit for the future as the curriculum and technology evolve.
These trends drive a need for furniture to be modular, moveable, reconfigurable, multi-functional and height adjustable, in addition to the normal needs for practical furniture with exceptional value. With these factors in mind, the new "Flexibility" range was developed and incorporates furniture for use in break-out areas, classrooms, and receptions and can be used in combinations to allow us to provide space for children to learn and grow.
The initial response is very positive, and as a result, a selection of the product range has already been taken to a conference of primary school heads in Salford. The Moving Wall system is generating considerable interest and is linking well with the current move towards open-plan classrooms being discussed by many architects.
