Q-Learn Ergonomic Furniture Featured in FIRA Pilot Programme

Q-Learn Ergonomic Furniture Featured in FIRA Pilot Programme

Evidence of the benefits of well designed furniture for use in school is well documented but has been outweighed by other factors. Although there is strong support that furniture designed to encourage correct posture will alleviate the problem of long term back pain, opportunities to show off the long term benefits of the Q-Learn range of ergonomically designed desks, chairs and stools have been limited.

The recent media coverage of the newly released BESA Policy 2008 report and FIRA's 'Safe Seats of Learning' campaign draws attention to the fact that the style and design of classroom furniture has remained largely unchanged since the 1960's. We hope that proper governance will be given to the importance of, not only, the correct height of desks and chairs but their design in relation to good posture.

It is a step forward that schools are getting involved by trialling furniture and teaching aids which promote good posture. A parent project coordinator for Wheatfield Primary and Nursery School told how they had, in conjunction with FIRA, been assessing the impact this furniture had on a group of year 2 students. These items, amongst others, included the height adjustable, ergonomic range of Q-Learn furniture. Wheatfield Head Teacher, Carolyn Booth said of the results, "We've found that children who had used the adjustable sloping desks and writing slopes have been sitting better. There has been a positive impact on their handwriting, reading and behaviour."

We are sure of a positive outcome as all parties work together to find a solution in overcoming the challenges each player has in delivering the best for our children.
