Education investment is never far from the top of today's political agenda. This is surely a reflection of the importance we all place on giving our children the best possible start in achieving success in the world beyond childhood.

Academies and BSF Schemes are bearing the first fruits of success and now it is the turn of primary schools to come under the spotlight. The government has announced that £150 million of extra capital is available in 2008-09, rising to £500 million per year in 2009-2010 and it is expected to remain at this level for around 15 years.

What can we expect for our money and when is it going to begin? The most deprived areas will see the first improvements in 2008 as the first scheme (Barnet) has had their funding approved. All local authorities will be involved from the 2nd year and progress will be monitored and time scales adjusted bases on progress.

The trend to involve and consult with all parties will continue and what has been learned through developing primary school exemplar designs will be applied to all schemes. This initiative is looking at more than school buildings as it hopes to improve standards in the areas of providing healthy school food, promoting sports and languages. At the heart of this transformation is the effective use of ICT in the classrooms.

Furniture will also be an important component of this programme. Schools will be looking for bright, attractive, non-institutional furniture which promotes healthy posture through compliance with the new standard for educational seating BS EN 1729.
